and her harp

I was blessed to be raised in a musical family. I had studied piano and violin for 6 years and was accustomed to singing in choirs and ensembles at church by the time I was 13. When my father purchased a lever harp for my mother I couldn’t resist the instrument. It’s hard to believe it has been over two decades since I began this life-long devotion to the Celtic (lever) harp.

My current instrument was an impulse buy while visiting a harp store to rent an instrument for a friend’s wedding. I knew Aurora would become a permanent part of my life as I plucked the first chords. My friend’s wedding was the first of many events graced by this lovely instrument. She has since accompanied me on my travels, to churches, festivals, and the occasional “Random Acts of Harping.”

My constantly expanding repertoire consists of classical, traditional, popular, and religious music. I seek to channel a deep love of nature and water through my music. The harp evokes many emotions, including the gentleness of spring rain, the rush of a flooding river, the rise and fall of ocean waves, and the effervescent glory of a mountain waterfall.

The Celtic lever harp uses levers to ‘sharp’ individual strings. The dexterity of movement required to produce a full range of tones and chords present a persistent challenge. Larger, more expensive pedal harps contain a gear box controlled by foot pedals.
